When
to visit
The best season to visit Sikkim is from March to May and
again from October to mid December. Autumn is the best time
to visit the Himalaya for clear skies and harvest colour.
The best season for trekking is from October to mid
December. During springs the rhododendrons and other flora
are in full bloom.
Winter is cold at high altitudes with snow above 3000 m and
sub-zero temperatures at night. In Gangtok temperatures drop
to 50 C (410 F) by mid January. February is often the
coldest month and can be wet and blustery.
Clothing
Except for special occasions, dress is informal. The
Sikkimese are still quite conservative and especially at the
monasteries, women should avoid wearing shorts and skimpy
tops; likewise, men should wear trousers and shirts at
monasteries. Bring a warm sweater or jacket for mornings and
evenings throughout winter and early springs. An umbrella
offers the best protection from monsoon rains. In the winter
an anorak is often quite useful to wear over a fleece or
woollen layer. |
